Technical SEO Checklist Before Launching a Business Website
Check crawlability, page titles, canonical URLs, redirects, mobile usability, structured data, and analytics before a website launch.
Technical SEO helps search engines discover and understand pages, but it does not replace useful content or a sound offer. Before launch, check that important pages can be crawled, URLs are intentional, and tracking is ready to measure what happens after visitors arrive.
Check crawl and index settings
Review the site's robots rules and page-level indexing directives. Make sure the live production site is not accidentally blocked by a development setting. Confirm that important pages return a successful response and that missing pages return an appropriate not-found status.
Give each page a clear title and description
Write distinct page titles and descriptions that accurately summarize the page. Avoid repeating the same phrase on every URL or promising something the content does not deliver. Check how titles appear in the browser and search previews.
Set canonical URLs consistently
Choose a preferred hostname and URL format, then use consistent canonical tags and internal links. Check that each indexable page points to its intended canonical URL and that tracking parameters do not create alternate versions.
Prepare redirects for moved pages
If a redesign changes URLs, map old pages to their closest relevant destinations. Use direct redirects and test them. Do not redirect every old URL to the homepage if a better replacement exists.
Publish and validate the sitemap
Include only canonical, indexable URLs in the XML sitemap. Verify that it loads and submit it through Search Console. A sitemap helps discovery but does not guarantee indexing.
Test mobile, speed, and structured data
Check important pages on mobile, review major performance issues, and validate structured data against visible content. Structured data should be accurate and should not include invented reviews, results, or facts.
Keep analytics and search tools connected
Verify analytics events, consent behavior, Search Console verification, and contact-form tracking. Test a real submission from start to finish.
Run this checklist on a staging copy and again after deployment. A successful launch preserves useful URLs and gives both visitors and search engines a reliable experience.
