Post-Purchase Surveys: What to Ask Shopify Customers
Learn when to ask for post-purchase feedback, how to keep surveys short, and how to turn responses into useful store improvements.
A post-purchase survey can reveal what customers expected, what helped them choose, and where the shopping experience felt unclear. It works best as a short invitation to share useful feedback—not a long questionnaire that interrupts the customer or asks for information the store does not need.
Start with one decision you want to improve
Decide what you want to learn before writing a question. Are customers having trouble finding a product? Do you want to understand which information influenced a purchase? Are you trying to identify friction in the checkout experience? One focused objective produces clearer answers than a survey that asks about everything.
Ask neutral, specific questions
Avoid leading wording that suggests the answer you want. “What almost stopped you from completing your order?” is more useful than “How easy was our great checkout?” Use a small number of questions and give customers an optional space to add context.
Possible questions include:
- How did you first hear about our store?
- What information helped you choose this product?
- Was anything unclear before you placed your order?
- What would have made checkout easier?
Adapt the questions to the store and the moment in the customer journey.
Choose timing and placement carefully
Ask at a point when customers can answer without disrupting payment or confirmation. Make participation optional, explain why feedback is being requested, and avoid showing the same survey repeatedly. Check the experience on mobile as well as desktop.
Turn responses into action
Review answers regularly and group recurring themes. A single comment may be an individual preference; repeated feedback can reveal a product page gap, confusing shipping detail, or an issue customers encounter during checkout. Assign someone to review the feedback and decide which changes to test.
Respect privacy
Collect only what is needed, explain how responses will be used, and follow applicable privacy rules and store policies. Do not include sensitive information in survey questions unless there is a clear, lawful reason and appropriate protections.
A survey earns its place when it is considerate of the customer and connected to a real decision the business can make.
